WeeChat is a standalone, text-based IRC client written in C[1], first made public on 5th of July, 2003[2]. IRC protocol support is implemented as a module and also Jabber is supported, Twitter support is in progress[1]. Many scripts are available, the client features scripting in Perl, Python, Ruby, Lua and Tcl[3].

WeeChat 0.3.4 was released in January 2011 and in the release a lot of bugs were fixed, along with a lot of new features[4]
